You may have looked at the cost of branding and website design services and thought, “For the price, I’ll do it myself!” As a solopreneur, you’ve gotten good at tackling all kinds of business tasks, even those outside your zone of genius. But your DIY website can come with a whole host of issues that make it harder for you to get found online – and may prevent your business from growing.
The biggest problem I see when people create a DIY website is they forget branding and website design is more than just looking cute. 💁🏻♀️ Your website establishes you as a trusted and professional business. Imagine landing on a website, only to find it hard to navigate or full of broken buttons. You won’t hang out there for long!
Let’s talk about some of the common website design issues I see, and why you need to fix them.
Nothing screams “DIY website” like mismatched colors and fonts. Inconsistent branding makes your business feel like a beginner, even if you’re full of knowledge and expertise (which I bet you are!).
Instead, pick a color palette and brand fonts – and stick with it. Make sure your colors and typography are consistent across your entire website. (Read how I decided on the branding for my own business.)

When you aren’t used to designing a website, it’s easy to get stumped on where things should go or how to direct your visitor. Instead, a lot of DIY websites end up feeling cluttered and unclear, which drives visitors (and potential customers) away.
The fix for this is to create a website with a clean, minimal look. Think about the most important action your visitor can take, and make sure you spotlight that content first.
And despite what you may think, you don’t have to pay thousands of dollars for a professional website. With my Starter Website package, I’ll design and set up your WordPress site in 1.5 days – without breaking the bank. This package includes a bit of DIY (to keep the cost low) while getting the support you need from a website designer.
There’s nothing worse than a website that just doesn’t work. A lot of people forget about mobile optimization when they DIY their website. A mobile-friendly website means that your site can adapt to any phone screen and functions normally.
Speed is also an important factor. Branding and website designers know how to keep your website fast and functional, like compressing images and getting rid of unused coding.
All of my website design packages include mobile optimization (and take website speed into account), so you can keep visitors around for longer!
