There’s a good chance you’re knee-deep in ecommerce research, and you’ve heard about a ton of different platforms: Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix, and Square. Personally, I’m a big WooCommerce fan, and I recommend it to all of my clients. But what is WooCommerce? And how does it compare to other ecommerce platforms out there?
I want to walk you through some of the common myths I hear about WooCommerce, so you have a clear understanding of what WooCommerce is and if it’s the right platform for you.
If you’re new to ecommerce, a user-friendly shop is probably top of your list. But WooCommerce isn’t as complicated as people think. If I’m being honest, there is more of a learning curve to WooCommerce than other platforms, but the options, customization, and price make it worth it!
Plus, there are plenty of guides out there to help. Like my Settin’ Up Shop course! This guided course will walk you through uploading products to your WooCommerce store, customizing your site, and selling online.
Unlike other ecommerce platforms, WooCommerce security is up to you because you’ll be running it through your WordPress site. But that doesn’t mean it’s not secure! If you use a security plugin and update your site regularly, you have nothing to worry about.
(Don’t want to worry about your site’s security? Sign up for Worry-Free Maintenance! I will install any needed plugins and keep your site updated – and backed up.)
This is a myth I’m always happy to bust. WooCommerce is one of my more affordable ecommerce sites out there. Unlike other platforms, they don’t charge a monthly fee. Of course, you’ll still pay transaction fees like any other platform – plus normal website fees like hosting and premium plugins that you use. However, you have a lot of control over how expensive it is to run your WooCommerce site.
A big worry that keeps people from selling on their own site is sales tax. However, WooCommerce makes it simple. There is a whole tab for taxes in Woocommerce where you can customize how taxes are collected and the percentage collected. You can also use plugins that will automatically calculate tax rates, such as TaxJar.
This myth is definitely busted! While you can sell physical products with WooCommerce, you can also sell digital products, subscriptions, services, and affiliate products. Trust me – I’ve set up a ton of sites for digital product creators. 😉
You also don’t have to be a small business to use WooCommerce. Whether you have ten products or a thousand, WooCommerce can handle it! I do recommend storing your products offsite, though, just to keep your site running smoothly (because heavy files can weigh it down).
Now that these myths are busted, I hope you have a clear idea of what WooCommerce is! Maybe you’re even considering using it for your own ecommerce site now. 👀 If that’s the case, check out my course, Settin’ Up Shop!
In this course, I’ll give you step-by-step guidance to upload your products, customize your shop, and make sales online. You don’t have to be a WordPress expert – because you’ll have one by your side (me!).
