If the cost of building a website has given you sticker shock, you’re in the right place. 😉 Building a website can be expensive, especially if you’re hiring outside help. But it doesn’t have to be. I’m going to share some of my favorite ways to create inexpensive websites that still look good and are functional.
This blog post includes affiliate links. I earn a small percentage of sales made through these links. Affiliate links are indicated by an asterisk (*).
Just because it’s cheap and easy on your wallet, doesn’t mean it has to be cheap looking. Here’s what I recommend for creating inexpensive websites for your small business.
There are tons of website builders out there. With affordability in mind, Squarespace, Wix, and WordPress.com offer low-cost options. However, they have limited customization. If you’re looking for more control and flexibility over your website design, I highly recommend WordPress.org. Hosting is pretty affordable, and you’ll get more out of it as your business grows. (Ps. Not sure the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org? Here’s a quick guide.)
Building a cheap website is possible with WordPress, and part of that comes down to the host that you choose. Premium hosting can cost you a pretty penny, but providers like Bluehost*, Kinsta*, and SiteGround* offer more reliable, budget-friendly options. If you’re just starting out, I highly recommend these. They also (usually) include a free domain for the first year, so that’s one less expense out of your pocket.
A WordPress theme is similar to a template. It will determine the style and appearance of your website. Custom themes can be expensive, so I recommend using a free theme to get started. You can also choose a premium theme, if you have it in your budget, but make sure it’s mobile-responsive and well-supported.
Part of what makes building a cheap website on WordPress possible are plugins! You’re able to customize a lot about your website, without paying an arm and leg. 🦵🏻💪🏻 Start with free plugins like Yoast SEO and Contact Form 7. Most paid plugins have a free option that you can start with.
A lot of inexpensive websites for small businesses are created with templates! It’s easy to DIY and gives you a great foundation for your website. You can buy templates for sites like Wix, Squarespace, and Showit. You can also find pre-designed templates for WordPress, along with tools like Elementor that make it easy for you to drag-and-drop design features. Bluechic* is my personal favorite for WordPress templates.
