You want to know what the professionals recommend. I take tips from my dentist on the best toothbrush, and advice from my hairstylist on the best shampoos. So maybe you’re curious – what does a brand designer recommend when it comes to branding? 🤔 My branding is something I take pretty seriously, and it’s done me a lot of favors. I’ve been able to build a recognizable brand that stands out (and even lends itself to inside jokes!). I’m taking you behind the scenes of my process of branding, and how I applied it to my business.
Like I do with every client, I worked through my branding process to determine which colors, logos, typography, and more would fit my brand. If you’re looking to create a cohesive look across your business, here are a few branding tips I applied to my own business.
I am known for my signature teal. 🩵 It’s pretty much the only color I use in my branding, aside from black and white. And this signature color not only makes my brand recognizable but it’s led to some good inside jokes. (Yep, I’ll probably show up to our discovery call in teal. 😂)
Having a signature color makes it easy to stay consistent across all platforms. From my website to social media to Pinterest, everything is tealed-to-the-max. I even wore teal to my brand photos! It makes it so easy to create a unified look with a signature color. And I bet when someone sees teal in their feed…they think of me. 🙌🏻
An important part of the branding process is to determine your fonts and color palette. And then stick with it. Way too often, I see brands switch up their fonts and colors to match current trends. But this just makes you blend in – instead of stand out.
My branding tip, which I use in my own business, is to stay consistent. Like I mentioned, you’ll find all my branding assets in teal. But I also stay consistent with the tone of the teal, the style, and the fonts that I use. This way, people know I’m the same person, no matter where they find me.
The process of branding includes your personality! Infusing your authentic self into your branding helps people connect with you and determine if you’re the right person to solve their struggles.
I like to keep my branding fun. I use lots of GIFs, humor, and a conversational style that matches my IRL personality. I’m also a former teacher, and I share how this background makes me perfect for website design because I can take clients step-by-step through each part of the process.
Tip #4: Practice What You Preach
What better way to build trust than by practicing what you preach? I do that by using the same process of brand for clients in my own business. To me, this signals to my audience that I’m not throwing made-up rules at them, but I actually believe and stand behind my design knowledge!
There are a ton of branding tips out there, but my best advice is to pick a signature color, focus on consistency, share your personality, and practice what you preach. It’s a win-win every time.
