At the start of a new year, everyone rushes to put together their New Year’s goals. Personally, I’m a big fan of setting business goals. They help me stay on track and march towards a better version of my business. But, when done incorrectly, they can also hold you back.

Let’s be honest: running a business feels like a dumpster fire sometimes. You’re so caught up in the day-to-day actions and tasks that it’s easy to forget about the big picture. What kind of life do you want to live? How do you want your business to feel?
One of the benefits of goal setting is that it helps you narrow your focus (and avoid the shiny objects). You can decide what your next steps are or what you’ll spend your money on by coming back to one single question: does this align with my goal?
And if it doesn’t align, you don’t have to ditch the idea completely. Just add it to an ideas list and come back to it later. Sometimes, you realize it wasn’t so great of an idea after all. 😅
While I’m all for setting business goals, I also see entrepreneurs make their lives so much harder by holding onto goals that no longer suit them. For example, I planned January down to a T. And then I completely pivoted my business to help out solopreneurs with the new newsletter compliance rules! (By the way, you can still book your newsletter compliance setup with me.)
If I decided to stick with the plan no matter what, my goal wouldn’t be supporting me anymore. It would have hindered me. That’s why my mindset with goal setting is to embrace the pivot. 🙌🏻 Don’t be afraid to adjust and move as life happens (because it will).
You know the benefits of setting business goals, but what happens when you can’t think of a business goal? Usually, this happens when your brain is swamped, so my first piece of advice is to take some time away from work and allow for some boredom! Your mind will naturally start to get creative again.
If you simply don’t know where to start, though, explore these goal-setting examples. They might help you generate ideas.
